ADDITION, SUBTRACTION MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION

Occasionally, due to a short school week, there will be no homework. If your child has been ill, their homework and other work done in class will be in their folders in their desks.   Play a game with your child while out in the car or walking.... have them find letters on signs, houses, buildings, menus, etc. Look for words in all these places also...there is much to see in our world...make connections to what we are doing in class and what they are reading at home.

Homework for May and June:

Home reading:

You are to continue reading 20 min 4 times a week. The calendar that is provided is for you to keep track of when your oral presentations are.

You will still receive a new math sheet every Monday. This will still be due on the following Thursday. Please check the calendar as to when your presentations take place.

Current Events Component:

_ You will be doing 3 presentations: All of them are on any current event you choose. Each one must be different.

_ You must bring in the article that you read. If you are unable to bring it in, then you must tell us what magazine/newspaper/website you took your article from.( there are newspapers available daily at school if you need one)

_ Share 2 questions that you had as you were reading.

_ Share 2 connections that you made either text-text, text-world, or text-self.

_ Share your thoughts around the article: Was it well written? Was the lead inviting? Was the closing strong?

What was your favorite part? What else would you like to know about this topic?

_ If you choose, you may put this together in a powerpoint to show the class. However, you will STILL be presenting it to the class. Remember, powerpoints are used as guidelines. It should not have everything you are

going to say on the slide. Too much text on one slide is confusing.

_ If you don’t do a powerpoint, then you are to use cue cards for your notes.

_ Your presentation should be around 2 minutes long. It is not meant to be a huge

_ See checklist below for what I am marking your on:

Eye contact: Great   Good   Needs Work

Voice: Good Projection   A bit soft   Barely hear anything

Notes: Powerpoint   Cue Cards

Use of Notes: Used notes just to glance   at Read directly from notes

Topic Covered: ALL questions above were answered   SOME questions were answered   Not enough info.

Thoughts for improvement:

Poetry component:

The poem must be at least 3 stanzas long.

If you are unable to find a poem that you like that is 3 stanzas long, then you are allowed to recite 3 separate poems.

You can recite a poem that you created or recite one that was written by another poet.

You must memorize your poem but are allowed to have jot notes on note cards

The checklist below will be what I am using to mark your presentation.

Eye contact: Great   Good   Needs Work

Voice: Good Projection   A bit soft   Barely hear anything

Notes: None   Cue Cards

Use of Notes: Didn’t use notes at all    Used notes just to glance at   Read directly from notes

Poem selection: Written by another poet   Written by student_

Homework Policy

Homework?.....Yes, Homework!

Here are a couple of policies I have on homework:

(a) Ripped/crumpled or homework that is in bad shape will be returned.  This means that the homework will be done again! (hint, hint)

(b) Messy work will not be accepted.

(c) Homework should always be given to me in their duo tang or pocket folder - no loose sheets accepted.

(d) Students who don't put names on homework are out of luck - I don't chase them and that means that the homework will be marked as incomplete!

(e) Homework packages  - This is when I look at my list of those people who have not passed in their work and put together a "homework package".  This means that some people will have one sheet to do while others will have 10 sheets - YOUR CHOICE!

(f) Homework packages will be given out on a weekly/biweekly basis.  The cover letter is to be signed and all homework is to be in on the date given!

(g) I do not give homework simply to fill your time.  The homework given has a purpose - to help keep the lessons learned in class fresh in your mind.
