THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION ASSIGNMENT

The Cultural Revolution (essentially between 1966 and 1969) was a time in China ’s history when the communist party under Mao Tse Tung encouraged the proletariat to rise up against the old practices in Chinese culture.  The proletariat was led in this uprising by a group of people known as the Red Guard.  The Red Guard was made up mostly of teenagers.   They were summoned by Chairman Mao Tse Tung to protect the forward progression of the Chinese Communist Party against "evil forces" such as imperialism and corruption, including those within the Communist Party who were identified as deviationists.

Red Guards could be found in all aspects of Chinese society from the Foreign Ministry down to supervision of siblings. The Red Guards sat in the Foreign Ministry supervising officials while briefly seizing power to conduct foreign affairs. Many Red Guards used their freedom to carry out personal vendettas.

Your assignment is to:
1) Read the section in the book “Viewpoints” dealing with the Cultural revolution (pp 245-253).
2) Read the notes on my homepage.  The notes are found under the assignments button.  You will notice that located in the notes is chapter two from Mao’s Little Red Book of Quotations.  Read these notes.
3) Many of these quotations had a direct impact on the Cultural Revolution.  Show how any FIVE of the quotations influenced the Cultural Revolution.  Be sure to link each quotation to the Cultural Revolution specifically.  This will be easier to do when you have read the pages in Viewpoints.
4)  You may follow the rubric below, or you may develop your essay in another way that still shows the influence of the Little Red Book of Quotations on the Cultural Revolution.  PLEASE ATTACH THE RUBRIC IF YOU ARE FOLLOWING IT.  OTHERWISE, I WILL ASSUME THAT YOU ARE NOT FOLLOWING THE RUBRIC, BUT CREATING YOUR OWN ESSAY USING YOUR OWN CRITERIA.
