Unit 1: About Africa

 

Racism in Halifax - case studies, Africville and Viola Desmond.
The Apartheid System in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela
Human Evolution - early African history, the empires, the travellers.
The map of Africa.  You will be responsible for knowing a minimum of 15 of the countries and/or their capitals.

 

Unit 2: Transatlantic Trade

Tribes in Africa (presentation) 
African Kingdoms, from Egypt to Mali
The transatlantic slave trade (reasons for the trade, where the trading went on, which countries were involved, when the trade flourished, and what conditions the slaves had to endure).

 

Unit 3: Slaves in America

The development of the American War of Independence (American Revolution), the American Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and the United States Constitution.  
Roots and the vocabulary from Roots.
Slave revolts
Underground Railroad
Uncle Tom's Cabin (abridged)

 

Unit 4: Civil War Era

Reasons for the civil war in America.
Contributions of the 54th Regiment.

 

Unit 5: Post Civil War Era

Reconstruction Era
The Big Three Black Leaders at the turn of the 20th century: Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois, and Marcus Garvey.   
Birth of the KU KLUX KLAN
Harlem Renaissance

 

Unit 6: Civil Rights 1950s-60s

The role of the American black troops in the Civil Rights Movement
Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s-60s.  Be able to list some causes and effects of this movement.  Martin Luther King and Malcolm X.

 Unit 7: Afro-Canadians

Independent study or project

Towards Freedom - ongoing reading at home.
