Dear Parents:
The following is a basic outline of the curriculum to be covered during the year, but it is in no means all-inclusive. Varying activities will be added to most areas, depending on interest and ability levels.
Language Arts -- Reading, writing, listening, and speaking will form a daily part of the language arts program.
-mini-lessons/demonstrations/modeling focused on concepts, skills, and strategies
-whole-class and small-group activities such as teacher read-aloud, shared reading sessions ,readers theatre, book buddies, guided reading and writers workshop
-independent reading
-individual/small group research and inquiry
-personal and critical response to readings
- A variety of novels will be studied through-out the year, covering a range of genre.
Math -- the mathematics program is based upon the use of manipulative materials. This enables the children to make a connection between the concrete and the abstract stages.
Math Makes Sense will be the texts utilized. Objectives include number operations (i.e. place value, adding and subtracting, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals), space and shape (i.e. geometric models, angles, congruence), measurement (i.e. volume, area, graphing, etc.), probability and mental math. Problem solving is intrinsic to each of these objectives and is ongoing through-out the year.
Social Studies- The social studies program focus on Culture and Citizenship.
Science- Four units will be covered this year: Diversity, Space, Electricity, and Flight. These units will be enhanced through class assignments and projects. The class work will be in the form of individual, small and larger group work.
Health- We will be looking at decision making, socialization skills and peer pressure, role models, nutrition, and growth and development. Our health nurse will provide most of the information on the growth and development topic. The students will complete a Personal Inventory Assignment. This is a project in which children are expected to identify and document personal traits, interests, abilities, skills, lifestyle preferences, and goals for the future.
Computers- Students will utilize the computers primarily to enhance their research skills.
Finally, it is my sincere intention that the school year be an enjoyable and enriching experience for your child. To this end, I solicit your support in contacting me at any time if there is a concern regarding your child.
Sincerely,
T. Barro/L. MacNeil
