General Description: The Human Rights Commission is headed
by
an executive director, who is also a
member
of the Board of Commissioners,
which
is headed by a chairperson. The
Human
Rights Act is a provincial statute
which provides equality
to everyone
regardless
of race, age, color, religion,
creed,
sex, sexual orientation, physical or
mental
disability, ethnic, national or
aboriginal
origin, family or marital status,
source
of income, political belief, affiliation
or
activity. It also protects people from
sexual
harassment.
Services Offered: The Nova Scotia Human Rights
Commission
is the government agency
responsible
for enforcing and administering
the
Human Rights Act. Its staff investigate
complaints
and provide public education
programs
as well as affirmative action and
race-relations
programs.
Procedure: Contact

person.
Usually there is no wait for Public
education
or race-relations unless the
division
heads and other personnel are on
other
assignments. Some waiting period for
investigation
depending on backlog of
cased,
but intake of complaints is taken
without
delay.
