Technology Education is open to all students, male and female, regardless
of grade or background. The program is designed to help students understand,
live and work in our modern industrial society. Students involved in the
study of Technology Education will receive an understanding of industrial
processes especially in relation to the practical activities in which they
are involved. Since the program derives its content from industrial
processes, the terms used are similar to those used in vocational education
and industry. The emphasis, however, will be on broad areas of learning
rather than on manipulative skills leading to occupational proficiency.
Grade Ten Courses
Construction Technology 10 Open 1.0 Credit
The purpose of this course is to help the student understand all aspects of
construction (how it is organized, how it is controlled, it’s impact on
society and the opportunities it offers). The student will study the basic
concepts of Frame House Construction and its’ relationship to the building
industry, emphasizing building terms, building practices, building materials
and the practical applications. Students will design a cottage floor plan
and build a model of the cottage. Students who would like to build an
individual project should consider registering for Production 11 where the
curriculum involves more project work.
Exploring Technology 10 Open 1.0 Credit
Exploring Technology is a course, which will aid students in discovering the
relationship between science, technology and the real world. The aim of this
course is to expose students to as many applications of modern technology as
facilities will allow. Students will be asked to problem solve, experiment,
research and report findings from research using a variety of technological
devices. This course is based on both academic and hands on skills to solve
technological problems. Course content will include photography, graphic
design, engineering, communications, robotics, pneumatics, computer aided
drafting and design and electronics. Although this course is offered at the
Grade 10 level, it is available to all students regardless of their present
standing.
Grade Eleven Courses
Communications Technology 11 Open 1.0 Credit
Communications Technology (CMT 11) is presented as a full credit course.
This course is designed to provide students with a background in the
ever-expanding field of Communications Technology. Students enrolling in
this course will be given the opportunity to explore various technological
methods of transmitting messages through different media. Major areas
explored in this course will be photographic reproduction, computer aided
design, video production, computer animation and media studies. This is an
activity-based course, which will help students develop problem-solving
skills within the field of Communications Technology. Design and
Electrotechnologies are Academic level courses, which will be of interest to
students considering further study in engineering or technology at
university or a community college. Since they are half credit courses,
students must register for both.
Production Technology 11 Open 1.0 Credit
Production Technology has an emphasis in either custom or mass production in
the wood lab. This course is intended to provide the students with a firm
foundation in fundamental principles of furniture design. Emphasis will be
on design, planning machines, wood finishing, sound construction and
forestry. Students will be required to perform certain tasks on machines as
well as construct a project of their own choice. Since this is primarily an
activity based course, class attendance is very important in achieving the
goals of the course.
Design 11 Academic 1.0 Credits
Design 11 involves students in using technology to develop solutions to
design problems and to conduct inquiries into design issues. Students work
independently and as part of design teams to explore design in a range of
practical contexts. Modules for this course include the following:
Design Fundamentals; The Built Environment; Product Design; An Introduction
to Computer Assisted Design; and Design Team or Independent Project.
Grade Twelve Courses
Communication Technology 12 Open 1.0 Credit
Communications Technology (CMT 12) explores the communication process in
detail - why it is necessary to communicate; how a message is transmitted;
and getting the message across. This course is designed to broaden the
student’s knowledge of opportunities available in the various fields related
to communications. Students will be encouraged to develop their photographic
skills while expanding their problem solving ability within the mass media
concept. As with Communications Technology 11, this is an activity based
course allowing students the opportunity to work with a wider range of
technology applications by combining audio, video and graphic reproduction
to produce multi-media presentations.
Production Technology 12 Open 1.0 Credit
The nucleus of Production Technology 12 is entrepreneurship. Students taking
this course should have a keen interest in entrepreneurship. At least 75% of
the class time will be devoted to research and theory dealing with topics
such as: evolution of production systems, material resources, manufacturing
technology and marketing. Students will go through the steps of forming a
company with the aim of manufacturing a product and making a profit.
Note: This is not a traditional Woodworking course.
Software Applications 12 Academic 1.0 Credit
This course is aimed at students who have an interest in computers and a
desire to maximize the use of technology in their lives. It is designed for
those who are familiar with recent Windows Operating Systems or equivalent
and possess general basic computer skills. Students will develop competence
with conventional software applications (word processor, spreadsheet, data
base, presentation software) and with the internet, e-mail, web pages and
digital imagery.
Film and Video Production 12 Academic 1.0 Credit
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of film and video with
particular emphasis on video production. Students will work on a variety of
projects both independently and as part of a small team. Note that this is a
challenging course, requiring individual creativity and commitment, as well
as the ability to work effectively within group situations. There is a
significant written component to the course throughout the course, including
script writing, film reviews and reflections on the video-making processes.
NOTE: FVP12 can be used to satisfy a Technology requirement within the PSP
guidelines for high school graduation.
Computer Related Studies 12 Academic 1.0 Credit
This course is designed for students who have an interest in the study of
computers and a desire to maximize the use of technology in their lives.
Computer Related Studies may assist students planning to pursue
post-secondary studies in this and related areas. The focus of the course is
on developing the ability to formulate and solve real-world problems using a
structured problem solving approach, both through the use of application
programs and through the design and implementation of programs created by
the student using a structured programming language. An interest and
facility in mathematics will be an asset in this course.
