General Outcomes: Language Programs

Grade Ten Courses
Core French 10 Academic 1.0 Credit
As Canada’s second official language, French is increasingly important in
the global workplace. Job opportunities with government, the travel industry
and education are enhanced by successful completion of these language
courses.
This program is designed for students who successfully have completed Grade
Nine Core French. This course provides a strong level of competency, which
will allow students to further their oral and written communication skills
in French.Topics covered include “Souvenir d`enfance”, “À table” and “La
simulation” as well as grammar activities including the Passé Composé, La
Futur and Le Présent.
Spanish 10 Academic 1.0 Credit
This course is designed for students wishing to begin the study of Spanish
at the high school level. Through interesting and useful situational
dialogue, the four-skill approach promotes language acquisition while at the
same time providing in-depth cultural study of the Spanish-speaking world.
Students who study Spanish will learn a language spoken daily by over 250
million people around the world [including 13 million in the United States].
Spanish is the official language of twenty countries and it is one of the
five official languages of the United States. Prerequisite: previous success
and interest in language is a definite asset.
Grade Eleven Courses
Core French 11 Academic 1.0 Credit
The course will follow the outcomes for High School Core French by focusing
on communicative activities, French culture and reviewing written material.
Students will read short stories and magazine articles, participate in group
work and projects and do creative writing.
Themes to be covered include cinema, travel in France, adolescence and la
francophonie. New grammar topics include the futur simple, conditionnel
présent, pronoms interrogatifs and expressions négatives.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Core French 10 or permission of the
Department Head.
Spanish 11 Academic 1.0 Credit
This course is a continuation of Spanish 10, which is a prerequisite.
Grade Twelve Courses
Core French 12 Academic 1.0 Credit
This program is designed for
students who have successfully completed Core French 11. Themes to be
explored include “Les carrières”, “La liberté de la presse” and “L’ésprit
Français”. Students will engage in letter writing, research, class
presentations, individual and group dialogues. Students will also engage in
creating a French environment with roleplaying activities such as “l`Immeuble”.
New grammar topics include le subjonctif, les pronoms rélatifs and le
conditionnel passé.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Core French 11 or permission of the
Department Head
NOTE: Core French 12 can be used as a university preparatory credit.
Spanish 12 Academic 1.0 Credit
This course is the continuation of SPANISH 11, which is a prerequisite.
