Introduction

The Crichton Park School Starr Award Program was implemented in 1998-1999, as a challenge for achievement opportunity, to help our students develop a sense of responsibility, in themselves and in the community, by providing a program to expand the students' horizons.  The program is based on ,and serves as an introduction to, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

This year, the program will be open to students in Grade Six.  The Starr Award program consists of four components.

Academics

Leadership or Citizenship/ Community work

Fine Arts

Physically active lifestyle

Within these areas, the students have a great deal of flexibility in terms of activities to pursue.  In this way, individual students can develop in terms of their own needs and interests.

Entry to this program will be through application.  The actual program will operate through contract, thereby allowing students to set their own goals, within the general parameters set out by the program committee.

We anticipate that students will be able to use their formally recognized accomplishments in community organizations, as well as their school accomplishments, to qualify for this award program.

We anticipate that parents will wish to support their children throughout the process, in an advisory / mentoring fashion.

Each student will also be assigned a staff member, who will advise him/her throughout the year.

Operational Qualifications

Participation in this program is by choice, and activities will mostly be undertaken as extra-curricular activities.

Assessment will be carried out at regular intervals to support the student in meeting the terms of his/her awards program.

A Record Book will be used to track progress.  Careful records should be kept to show progress in all four areas.

The student may incur costs associated with the program.  While it is our intention that the costs are to be borne by the student, none-the-less, no student will be denied access to the award program because of costs.

It is reasonable that a student may require a mentor  in a particular area to complete his/her project. We will assist in finding a qualified person to help students, but our experience indicates that parents can be a great help in this area.

You will have to prepare a presentation related to your area of research which you will give  at the Awards ceremony and to the student body.

You will receive the award at the presentation ceremony in April.

You must be prepared to make a time commitment to extra-curricular activities.

You must choose areas of interest in the four categories.

You must write a proposal telling us what you want to do.

You must meet with an adult to check the organization / progress of your four-part work., because it is intended that this work be done over a period of time, not all at once.

You have to prepare a presentation related to your area of research, which you will give towards the end of the assigned timeline.  This will be in early May.

You will receive the award at the presentation ceremony in May.

Students should be prepared to spend a minimum of 7 hours in each area over the remainder of this school year.  It is not intended that this program become a marathon, and have the entire program completed in one weekend.
