The First Bicycles

Back

It is said that the Egyptians had bicycles over 3000 years ago.  Historians think that they can see bicycle like objects in some of the drawings found in come of the old Egyptian tombs.  Because the Egyptians made light weight wheels with spokes and were very clever builders, then it would be very possible that a carpenter would connect two of these wheels with a wooden frame and have made a bicycle.

Leonardo's Sketch

The next appearance of the bicycle was in 1490 by the great artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci.  He made a doodle at the bottom of a page that had 3 wheels and looked a lot like a tricycle.  It may have been meant to carry a canon and a soldier to fire it.  3 years later, he did another doodle.  This time the machine had 2 wheels and appeared to be moved by a pedal attached to a chain.  It really sounds a lot like the bikes that we have today.  Sadly Leonardo never developed his machines further then the sketches.

In 1642 the next sign of the bicycle was made.  A craftsman made a window for a church in Stokes Poges, England.  In the picture on the window there is a young boy sitting on a saddle that it on top of 2 wheels.  The window maker may have been showing a popular children’s toy at the time.

You can’t really say who made the first bicycle because the very first ones were just toys for children.
