Text Box: Learning Centre Support

As a learning centre teacher at Tantallon Elementary School, I would like to introduce myself.  I would like to share with you some aspects of my role in the school, in terms of meeting the various learning styles of individual students.

I strongly support Tantallon Elementary School staff’s belief in early identification and effective intervention to meet the needs of individual students. To allow each student to experience optimum success I work collaboratively with the classroom teachers to determine the need and the form of support given.  Children may be referred to the Program Planning Team. Support may include in class (ie. co-teaching), individual, small group, or consultations with classroom teachers.  The level of support offered may vary, for example a student may only require monitoring and occasional checks throughout the year and/or additional support at certain times.   If changes are made to your child’s level of support throughout the year you will be informed.

Curriculum Outcomes provide a framework for program planning and are meant to support learning for all students.   Specific Curriculum Outcomes are particular to your child’s grade level.  Each student has his/her own individual learning style and students meet with success in different ways and at different paces.  Sometimes it is unrealistic to expect a student to achieve grade level Specific Curriculum outcomes.

When a child is experiencing undue frustration or difficulty, or if specific curriculum outcomes are not attainable, a plan is developed which may include extra support, adaptations, or an Individual Program Plan (I.P.P.), to ensure optimum success for a student.

As the need arises throughout the year, the learning centre teacher may assess students receiving support, for example in the program areas such as math and/or language arts.  The assessment results are discussed with parents/guardians and are shared with the classroom teachers to further support the individual needs of the student.

I look forward to working with you and your child. Please feel free at anytime throughout the year to contact me to discuss your child’s progress.
