Totems: If I were a thing, I’d be this spatula!

All right, where has the time gone?  Seems like only yesterday we were eye-balling each other for the first time, and now, here it is, early week #3, end of summer, beginning of fall, and nothing but positive feelings towards the best darn drama class ever to shake their hands like Peter Pan!  We are starting to get comfortable with one another, function well as a group in warm-ups and in improvisational games.  We have committed to memory, eat, drink, and breathe the three rules of improvisation:

  1. Do not think!  Say whatever pops into your head!

  2. Say “Yes! And…”

  3. Make your partner look great.

We are even starting to enjoy the song styling of Ms. Rosemary Clooney!  "Are the stars out tonight...cha, cha, cha..."

Where can we possibly go from here???  It is time, boys and girls, for all of us to boldly go where we have yet to go before and to ramp up the trust factor.  What we need is more information about one another in order to strengthen the bonds that will allow us to succeed as a group and as members of that group.  So…keep reading…here it comes…

Find some thing that best represents you, a personal symbol or totem, and prepare a two-minute monologue or speech about it.  The totem or representative object needs to be something you can easily bring to class next week for presentation.  This assignment is designed to get you to think about yourselves and to help others understand who you are.  Ask yourselves, “If I were an object, what would I be?”  Then, think about it for a while, and narrow your choices down to a few things.  Finally, pick the object you think best represents you, can be easily brought to class, and can be the subject of a two-minute prepared talk.

While I encourage all of you to speak from your hearts, you will need to have the text of your presentation on paper to hand over to me at the end of your talk.  Please include a hand-drawn facsimile of your totem somewhere with your text.

Have serious fun with this.  That is to say, enjoy doing this assignment seriously.

You will be graded using the following “YES!” rubric:

Y – you met minimum requirements of exercise

E – extra effort evident

S! – stupendous!
