The Charles P. Allen High School
Wind Ensemble consists of students in Grades 11 and 12. The wind ensemble
is a required component of the music 11 and 12 courses, and all students
in the wind ensemble are either in these two courses, or completing the
International Baccalaureate music program. The wind ensemble is the
largest performing ensemble at Charles P. Allen High School, regularly
performing with numbers from 70 to 80 students. The group is dedicated
and driven to perform music at the highest possible standard , and
explore repertoire of the highest quality.
The 2008-2009 wind ensemble season was dedicated to Canadian
Repertoire, with the ensemble performing works by Bob Bauer, Elizabeth
Raum, Anita Sleeman, Howard Cable, Andre Jutras, Ronald MacKay and many
others.
The ensemble began the 2009-2010 season with a commissioning project,
performing a new work for wind ensemble, solo clarinet and percussion
ensemble written by local composer Dinuk Wijeratne. Performing with the
ensemble were Mark Adam, percussion, and Kinan Azmeh, clarinet.
Last season the wind ensemble will performed special concert celebrating
the 100th anniversary of the composition of Holst's 1st Suite in Eb, and
at the end of the year the group performed four movements of de Meij's Lord of the
Rings Symphony.
