School Farm Friends

Process
In your group…

1.

Brainstorm a list of farm animals. Choose one to research.

2.

Email your teacher telling them which animal you have chosen and why. Your teacher will then provide you with the e-mail address(es) of one or two experts who know about your animal. These will be a farmer or a university student studying agriculture.

3.

Write an introductory e-mail to your experts
  • Introduce yourself.
  • Tell which animal you have selected.
  • Ask specific questions if you have any at this time.
  • Ask if they have any sources to suggest

4.

While waiting for a response:
  • Discuss what things you need in your presentation to the student council.
  • Visit some sites on the resources page to find out:
  • What climate does your animal need?
  • What does it eat?
  • How many would you have?
  • The cost of buying and keeping it – food, equipment.
  • The ‘care’ it needs – list the daily, weekly and monthly jobs that would need to be done to look after it.
  • The amount of area the animal needs to live.
  • The buildings needed for this animal.
  • You may want to print a Notes sheet.
  • Design the area this animal would live in.
  • Include a drawing or model in your presentation.

5.

Send email to your experts until you have all the information you need. You may participate in a ‘chat’ with an expert.

6.

Decide on the form of presentation you are going to give - (poster, speech, multi-media).

7.

Decide what job each group member will do.

8.

Design a draft copy of your presentation.

9.

Discuss this draft with your teacher.

10.

E-mail the school council requesting permission to give your presentation at their next meeting.

11.

Prepare your final presentation.

12.

Attend the school council meeting and give your presentation.

Enjoy your school farm!
