Handout from parent meeting - Feb 6th

This page is intended to provide parents and families of current and future IB students with information that will be useful in their decision making and planning. Truly the value of the IB Diploma is the rigorous and thorough academic preparation students receive as they plan for university. However, it is also true that the IB Diploma Programme prepares students for whatever challenges they face after high school. John Messenger, Head of the IB Programme for the Department of Education has written an essay of the intrinsic values of this course of study.

The University of British Columbia has a very positive view of IB Diploma Graduates. This is a letter about the value of IB written in 2006 by the former president of UBC, Martha Piper. Locally, Dalhousie University, The University of King's College and Saint Mary's University have been very supportive of your IB Diploma Graduates. The University of Prince Edward Island recently announced changes to their IB policy that offers a full year of credit for a Diploma score of 28 points! Acadia University, Mount Allison University and Saint Francis Xavier University all have IB recognition policies that are significant.

.The IBO also offers some information about universities and graduates from the IB Diploma Programme.

IB World Results. This is a letter from the Department of Education which discusses 2009 Nova Scotia IB results. Please read! In 2009 all 39 of our IB graduates were successfully placed at university having garnered close to $400 000 in renewable scholarships. Last year's graduates had an average Diploma score of 32 points (above the world average) with a top score of 40 points. The numbers of students with A's and B's on their Extended Essay exceeded international averages in the last two years.

Also, I just wanted to let you know, that after 2 years (and then some) I can finally say - I am SO glad I did IB. I listened to my roommate (who did not do IB) have a breakdown to her mother last night because she was already feeling "swamped" with work, while the rest of us are pretty much bored out of our minds. Direct quote (in between sniffles): "Everyone else here did IB, and they aren't stressed at alllllll" (!!!) Feel free to pass this news along to any grade 11's or 12's feeling the slightest bit of doubt over their decision: it WILL pay off in the finest of ways- they just have to wait :)  from a 2009 graduate
