CAS in an acronym that
stands for – creativity, action and service. This component of the IB
Diploma Programme is one of the core elements of what
makes the Diploma special in educational curriculum. The CAS program
underscores the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, as it
provides balance to the academic focus that is often placed on university bound
high school students. CAS challenges students to develop a values system by
which they enhance their personal growth. It should develop a spirit of
open-mindedness, lifelong learning, discovery and self-reliance. It should
encourage the development of new skills on many levels: creative skills,
physical skills and social skills. It should inspire a sense of responsibility
towards all members of the community. It should also encourage the development
of attitudes that will be respected by others, such as determination and
commitment, initiative and empathy. The emphasis of CAS is on experiential learning. Students are expected to be involved in activities outside of class for the equivalent of at least 3-4 hours per week over the two years (150 hours total) in a balanced range of different experiences. A candidate must complete a minimum of three activities in each of the three areas of concentration. In order to build upon and develop new skills and abilities beyond their academic endeavors, students are expected to seek out new experiences that will introduce them to a broader understanding and appreciation of their community, both locally and globally. Participation in programs like the Duke of Edinburgh Awards is a perfect complement to the CAS program as it echoes many of the same values as the Diploma Programme – leadership, service, physical activity and fitness. We will be planning activities that will involve larger groups of IB students from both grades in an effort to continue to build our school service community. It is imperative that you see yourself as part of a larger group - both within the school but perhaps more significantly as a global group.
CREATIVITY Creativity is interpreted broadly to include a wide range of arts activities as well as the creativity students demonstrate in designing and implementing service projects. This could include creative design and implementation of a service program for Student Council or a community based volunteer non-profit organization. More typically students can satisfy this requirement through dance, theatre or musical performance. ACTION Action can include
not only participation in individual and team sports but also taking part in
expeditions and in local or international projects. Participation in a service project (McNab’s SERVICE Service activities are often the most significant events for IB Diploma students due to their ability to transform young, eager individuals into responsible, community minded youth. The service provided can be within the school, the local or global community. . What does IBO say about CAS? |
