CONVECTIONAL RAINFALL   Ch. 5  P. 50-70

back to Weather page

Convection is caused by the unequal heating of the earth's surface. The resulting condition is that rising currents of warm air are separated by more widespread areas of colder air. The colder air slowly sinks to take the place of rising warm air.

The condition of rising currents of warm air separated by more widespread areas of slowly sinking air is referred to  as CONVECTION. P.54-55

The warm air rises, condenses and a cloud is formed. The air inside the cloud is warmer than the air outside the cloud. It will continue to rise until it cools and sinks. A large CUMULONIMBUS cloud will form in this way. Heavy rainfall will occur for a period of time and suddenly stop. P.61

The cloud will disappear and the sun will shine again. The Prairie Provinces receive most of their moisture in the summer months through CONVECTIONAL RAINFALL.        P.67
