Roman Statesmen                                                                                                back to Rome page

     Rome's triumph over Carthage marked the beginning and end of the Roman republic. During the war the senatorial class had gained supreme power over economic, social and political life. After the war unrest by the under privledged classes of people led to revolution. Through assassinations and trickery most opposition to the senators was suppressed but the Roman Republic still came to an end. Most of the leaders of the time were either fighting to maintain the status quo in Roman society or attempting to replace the republican government with dictatorial rule.

     Some of these leaders were the following.

MARCUS PORCIUS CATO;

LUCIUS CORNELIUS SULLA;

MARCUS TULLIUS CICERO;

ANAEUS POMPAY;

MARCUS JUNIUS BRUTUS;

GAIUS JULIUS CAESAR; see additional info on Caesar on this web site.
