Homework in 3 Mahoney is very routine.   This will be generally be the same each week. Please sign your child’s agenda each night after the homework has been completed. The agenda is an important tool in the communication between home a school, so do check daily for homework and messages.

 Spelling and Math Homework:

Both Language and Math homework will be given out each Friday.  Your child will arrive home with his/her homework.   The weekly Language and Math homework involves a variety of activities for the week and is due every Wednesday.  This way, children can do a little each night.  However, they may hand in any completed work earlier in the week if they wish.

Mathematics Home Activity Packs:

In Term 2, your child will be bringing home Mathematics: Home Activity Packs.  These activities will help you to become familiar with the types of mathematical experiences your child has in class.  The Mathematics: Home Activity Packs contain learning activities that will provide opportunities to reinforce concepts your child is learning in school.  These activities are intended to encourage enjoyable learning experiences that you and your child can share.  There will be times when an activity involves an outcome we have not yet explored in class.  This is not meant to frustrate the student but will be an opening for future exploration.

Each activity will include an activity card with directions and materials to complete the activity.  Each activity will go home on Thursday and should be returned the following WednesdayIt is important to return the activity with all materials on time, so that it can be used by other students and their families.  I only have one copy of each of the activities, so please be punctual with the return so everyone can enjoy and benefit from these activities.

You and your child will find the activities more enjoyable if you can do them together in a well-lit area with no distractions like television, computer or radio.  You will need a table, pencil, paper and crayons as indicated in each pack.  Encourage your child to describe the activity to you as you do it together.  The conversation will encourage your child’s success.

Reading

Reading at home is an essential part of the Grade 3 Language Arts program.  It is necessary in the development of confidence, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.  The READ WITH ME CLUB will be how students in our class will record their reading. This is how it works:

·        Each child reads for 15-20 minutes each night, at least 4-5 times per week.

·        Parent dates and initials in the appropriate space on the table.

·        When child has accumulated 25 signatures, he or she returns record sheet to the teacher and becomes a member of BLT Elementary’s READ WITH ME CLUB 25 and receives an award!  I anticipate that everyone will be a member by between mid October to mid November.

·        Your child can then try to become a member of the READ WITH ME CLUB 50.  (The 25 nights they’ve already read will go towards the 50 J)

To build confidence and fluency it is also encouraged that you have your child read orally to you regularly
