Career Resources for Counsellors

INTRODUCTION Theodore Pinkweather has just called Leslie Thomas Junior High in a panic. A former Leslie Thomas student, Theodore knew he could count on the students from his old neighborhood to lend a helping hand. Theodore is in charge of the local Canada Employment Center. His office is a busy one, with people of all ages coming in to find out about different career opportunities and receive career counselling. Clients often like to take home some material to read on careers that are of interest to them. Theodore and his staff are quickly running out of printed resources and also need to update the pamphlets and posters they have in the office. TASK To help Theodore and his staff out, you are to create one of the following: A pamphlet (either by hand or computer) or a poster (using a full size piece of bristol board) Your pamphlet/poster should :
The bonus here is not only will you be helping Theodore out, you will be learning all about careers that will be of interest to you! PROCESS Because the Employment Center wants to cater to people like yourself now and in the future, they have asked that you create a poster or pamphlet about a career that is of interest to you. Follow these directions: 1. Go to the Canlearn website (see link below under Resources). Read about Step One: Identifying your Skills and click on Student Planner. 2. Follow the directions given on the site. Answer all the questions in the Abilities and Aptitudes Quiz. This should take you about 20 minutes. 3. When you are finished answering all the questions, the computer will show you a screen entitled Student Planner Quiz Results. Read through this list and click Continue at the bottom of the screen. 4. The computer has sorted through thousands of careers based on the information you provided in the quiz and come up with a list of careers that may be of interest to you. Click on any of the careers listed to find out more information. 5. Select the career which seems most interesting to you. On a sheet of paper, put the headings: Description, Education, Employment Outlook, Examples of Occupation Titles, and Institutions. 6. Use the information provided in the Canlearn website to record information under the headings you listed in #5 above. 7. Visit at least two other websites listed under Resources below to find out more information on the career you have selected. 8. Use the information you have collected to create a pamphlet/poster on the career. How you arrange the pamphlet/poster is up to you (feel free to be creative!) but remember it should:

EVALUATION
CONCLUSION Your poster/pamphlet should be submitted to Ms. MacDonald by November 1, 2002 so that she may pass them on to Theodore.
