Want to be successful in junior high?  Follow these 5 steps to success:

1.  BE ORGANIZED

  • Use your planner to keep track of homework and dates

  • Use binders to organize your notes

  • Get the phone numbers of a few classmates.  If you are absent you can call to find out what you missed.

  • Keep a copy of your schedule at home...and use it.

  • Get your materials ready and book bag packed before you go to bed at night

2.  MANAGE YOUR TIME WELL

  • Have a calendar at home (on the fridge) to help you and your parents keep track of appointments, practices, project due dates, etc.

  • Use the time your teachers give you in class to do homework, ask questions, and get help.

  • Be on time for school and on time for class

  • Break studying for major tests or doing major projects into manageable "chunks"

  • Get involved in extra-curricular activities.  Studies have shown that students who take part in extracurricular activities do better in school!

3.  STUDY SMART

  • Find out when you study best (after school? after supper?) and make this your study time.

  • Find a place at home where you can work on your homework and not be interrupted or distracted.

  • Know what to study for tests - know what the test is going to be on so you know what to study.

  • Take good notes in class.

4.  GET HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT

  • Be sure to ask your teacher, resource teacher, classmate, parents, guidance counsellor, etc. for help if you need it.

  • Go to extra help sessions

  • Ask questions in class

5.  SET GOALS AND CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES

  • Set three goals for yourself for the week (or month) and three goals for the term.  Write them down on a piece of paper and post them somewhere you can see them.

  • Some students enjoy working towards something (eg:  A's and B's on report card = new CD).  Negotiate with your parents.

  • Believe in yourself!

For information on courses, dates, honor role requirements and more see the front section of your school planner/agenda.
