STRATEGIES TO HELP WITH DIFFICULT WORDS |

Look at the beginning and ending of letters in the word.
Look for smaller words in larger words.
Try to sound out the word.
Skip the word and try to derive meaning from the sentence.
Read ahead for clues that might help.
Share background information about the story ( i.e. What do we already know
about the text?)
Look at the illustrations and discuss what you see.
Make a guess or a prediction.
Does your guess/ prediction make sense? Check by reading the sentence
over.
If your child is unable to use problem solving to correct the word in question,
then you may have to tell them the word.
***** If there are too many unknown words, the reading material is too difficult for your child. If the reading material does not pose a challenge, your child should seek out books that will promote growth. Try to find a balance where the child is practicing, identifying and using strategies to figure out unknown words without causing frustration.
