The Witch's Curse (Scroll down for Roahl Dahl's version and for the children's versions.)

Roald Dahl is very sassy! The children work with "interesting words" , as Roald Dahl so likes to do. In this poem, there are  8 lines and each line has 8 beats.  These witches are our idea of the typical Halloween witch- we have spoken about where the negative meaning of "witch"  began. Hundreds of years ago, there were cases where (usually) women used nature (plants) for healing- they were the first "doctors". They were seen as powerful and well respected. This did not sit well with 'those in power' and a war was waged against the 'old hags'  (witches) who were supposedly working with the devil to mix magic potions that could be harmful.  Today, members of the  Wicca religion are known as witches and are still lovers of nature and healers. Their religious observances celebrate nature and the changing of the seasons. There is no intention here to offend anyone. These are about our traditional Halloween Witches and a chance to learn about poetry in a fun way.

Roald Dahl's Version:

Frizzled Like A Fritter

A stupid witch who answers back

Must burn until her bones are black!

A foolish witch without a brain

Must sizzle in the fiery flame!

An idiotic witch like you

Must roast upon the barbecue!

A witch who dares to say I'm wrong,

Will not be with us very long!
