|Role of the Guidance Counsellor|
The role of the Guidance Counsellor includes the following responsibilities:
Work with the school and community to develop and implement an effective Guidance program.
Provide personal, social, academic and career counselling to individuals and small groups.
Provide consultation services to parents.
Maintain and distribute information on guidance related topics.
Help build and promote a positive and nurturing school climate.
Assist students from diverse cultures and traditions.
Assist in mediation and conflict resolution.
Be an active member of the school’s Program Planning Team.
Work with staff and administration to identify and support “at risk” students.
Present or assist in class or group presentations in guidance-related issues.
Communicate with agencies such as Community Services, Public Health, etc.
Make referrals to both school board personnel and outside agencies.
Coordinate guidance related programs, workshops and services.
Register all incoming students.
Organize and manage all student files.
Assist grade 9 students with high school registration and course selection.
Visit elementary feeder schools to meet with incoming grade 6 students and facilitate transition meetings with elementary staff.
Coordinate orientation for incoming grade 6 students.
Other tasks requested by the administration.
