ASTRONOMY 12

CLASSWORK and HOMEWORK

Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies and the universe as a whole.  This course is intended for students who require a second science credit for graduation and have a keen interest in exploring the wonders of the universe from our earthly perspective.  There will be a reduced emphasis on the use of mathematics and physics but some important physical laws will be discussed and calculations will be conducted.

4 Major Topics will be covered:

Astronomy 12 does not require a text book.  When possible, course material will be supplemented with guest speakers, night observations, computer simulations, hands-on lab activities and videos.

Students should bring a binder, looseleaf, pens, pencils, ruler and scientific calculator to class.  Expectations for general classroom behaviour are outlined in the Sackville High School Student Handbook.  Students will participate in both individual and group learning activities.

Assessment for Astronomy 12 will be done solely on the achievement of outcomes.  These outcomes will be provided to students at the beginning of each major unit.  Assessment will be both formative (assessment for learning through reflections, learning logs and quizzes) and summative (assessment of learning through tests and a final exam).  Students who do not submit assessments on their respective due dates will be referred to the Intervention Room during their study period the following day.  Failure to report to the Intervention Room will result in an in-school suspension.

Above all, students are expected to continually ask questions, be open to new and contradictory ideas and have FUN!
