Author Madeleine de la Monthe
Title Visualization in Three Dimensions
Grade Level 11
Subject Area Mathematics
Overview of unit/lessons/activities (assumptions of prior knowledge/learning)

Students will use Autograph to help them visualize plotting points in 3 dimensions, introduce the concept of planes and applying these concepts to solving various word problems found in chapter 1 of Mathematical Modeling, Book 2.

Students start by exploring linear, quadratic and sinusoidal equations in 3 dimensions, then move on to visualize how points and planes are plotted.

Part 2 of the activity looks at the word problems found on page 9 from the text book. Students solve the problems by plotting the points in Autograph.

It is assumed that students are familiar with systems of 2 equations.
Correlations to ICT and curriculum outcomes

Curriculum Outcomes:

C8 demonstrate an understanding of real world relationships by translating between graphs, tables, and written descriptions

C19 solve problems involving systems of equations

C12 interpret geometrically the relationships between equations in systems

C13 demonstrate an understanding that an equation in three variables describes a plane

E1 demonstrate an understanding of the position of axes in 3-space

E2 locate and identify points and planes in 3-space

ICT Outcomes:

BOC 12.1 (relates to 9.1 – 9.4) use a wide variety of technology, demonstrate a clear understanding to technological applications, and consistently apply appropriate technology to solve curriculum problems

PTS 12.5 (relates to PTS 9.6 and RPSD 9.2) create electronic charts, tables and graphs; and design, create, and manipulate spread sheets and databases, as part of the process of collecting, analyzing, and displaying data independently.
