Overview of unit/lessons/activities (assumptions of prior knowledge/learning)

This project is an extension of Unité 6, " Pensons Vert!",of Passages 3. I decided to go into this unit with my 10's as we were ready for a new project to practice grammar skills we'd been working on, and we were about to enter into Earth Week. We started with discussions about Réduire, Réutiliser and Recycler. We also discussed vocabulary related to les « 3 R ». The grammatical components we had covered were verbes au présent et passé, les pronoms objets directs, and les pronoms "y" and " en".

To integrate technology, I decided to try a project that would see the students create photo movies               ( diaporamas  demonstrating the practices of the «3 R » I wanted to use Photo Story 3. I then hoped to show the students' work to other French classes, and, show the best work to the whole school on video announcements.

Projected timeline for preparation and for carrying out activities

A week should be set aside for introducing the project, getting photos and creating the photo movie.

Another three or four classes should be set aside for viewing and evaluations.

Time is difficult to forecast, as variables such as class composition, absences, interruptions and technical hiccups will all affect progress.

Detailed instructions for each activity or lesson (teacher notes, activity information, learning strategies, teacher role, student roles)

 1) We had covered verbs in the present and past tenses, the impératif, direct object pronouns, and the pronouns "y" and "en".

2) Using Passages 3, Unité 6, « Pensons Vert!», we reviewed related vocabulary and discussed protection of the environment through practice of the 3 R's.

3)I explained the project to the students. I gave them a handout explaining the process and evaluation, and noting some useful websites.

4)We watched the Photo Story tutorials on the Moodle site.

5) I created the groups.

6) The groups received the "R" their photo movie would illustrate.

7) The students brought in their cameras, and we took pictures inside and outside of the school. They also took photos outside of school time. I had the students save their photos on CD's or DVD's.

8)We went to the computers. The students arranged their photos with Photo Story 3.

9) They added text.

10) They added narration.

11) They added motion.

12) They added music.

13) They saved their photo stories.

14) We viewed them in class.

15) We shared them with other classes, and then with the school on video announcements.

Student products expected

Samples (include teacher notes, assessment information, student work if available)

Logistics (organization, grouping, management issues, access to technology)

I had a class of 26 Grade 10's. I divided them into  groups of 2 and 3. I made sure that each group included a student that had sound ability in the language and a student that was strong in the area of technology. I wrote the terms Réduire, Réutiliser and Recycler  on slips of paper and put them in a hat. One person from each group drew a paper from the hat, thus giving the group the subject of their photo story.

Lockview has a roll-out cart of 15 laptops which are loaded with Photo Story 3, so we did not have to leave the classroom. I appealed to my principal to purchase headsets with microphones.

If you plan to use a lab, make sure that the computers are loaded with Photo Story 3, and that you have headsets with microphones.
