Grade Level

11

Subject Area

Biology 11

Overview of unit/lessons/activities (assumptions of prior knowledge/learning)

Students will be required to classify a hardwood and/or softwood tree using the 'Interactive Guide to
common native trees of Nova Scotia'  slide presentation located on the Natural Resources  website.

Correlations to ICT and curriculum outcomes

BOC 9.3 (relates to 6.3)demonstrate comfort with keyboarding and manipulation of computer input and peripheral devices as they work

Biology 11 Outcomes:

• use organisms found in a local or regional ecosystem to demonstrate an understanding of fundamental principles of taxonomy (316-5)

• identify questions, limitations, and alternatives inherent in a classification system (214-2, 214-7, 212-1)

• describe and apply classification systems and nomenclatures used in species (214-1)

  •  use library and electronic tools to collect and communicate

information on techniques used in the classification process (213-6, 215-1)

Projected timeline for preparation and for carrying out activities

This activity can be incorporated while doing other taxonomy/classification related activities.  It should range from 10-20 minutes.

Equipment Requirements: (computers, software, etc)

Access to  at least one computer with internet capability.

Teaching materials provided (Blacklines, worksheets, templates, teacher materials)

Teachers will have to gain access to samples of softwood and/or hardwood trees. Another option is to put together folders with photos of the leaves and other important features needed for classification.

Resources available for teacher/student use (websites, references, etc)

Website for keying out trees http://gov.ns.ca/natr/forestry/Treeid/

Detailed instructions for each activity or lesson (teacher notes, activity information, learning strategies, teacher role, student roles)

Students can work alone or within a group.  They will be given a tree sample and be asked to use this website  http://gov.ns.ca/natr/forestry/Treeid/ to classify their tree sample. Teachers can determine how many samples they would like each student/group to identify. Students need to be instructed to use the hardwood or softwood key. Students can be asked to include the steps they took to find their species of tree.

Student products expected

Students will show the teacher the solution for each assigned tree.

Samples (include teacher notes, assessment information, student work if available)

Logistics (organization, grouping, management issues, access to technology)

Depending on accessibility to computers this activity could be done with only one computer.  This activity can be completed while another activity is being run. Students can work alone, with a partner or within a group depending on teacher preference.  As a computer is available student(s) would go to the computer access the website and key out their tree sample. Once student(s) have chosen their answers they would check these with their teacher.

Assessment information (e.g., rubrics for products and/or process)

Check to see students  have correctly identified assigned tree species.

Possible extensions

Students can critique this website for ease of use and selection of trait qualities.
