Overview of unit/lessons/activities (assumptions of prior knowledge/learning)

 ∞ Students will develop a map of the Mi'kma'ki and modern day reserves and complete activities on the Political Unit. 

They will learn the concepts of mapping on Google Earth and relate it to the concepts of First Nations history in the Maritimes.

They will compare the location of their homes to present day reserves.

They will learn about the original settlement areas of First Nations people in comparison to reserves today.

Curriculum Outcomes:

Students will be expected to

ü      Identify, describe, and map selected features of the traditional territory called Mi’kma’ki.

ü      Recognize that the Mi’kmaw were the original occupants of the Mi’kma’ki

ü      Compare and Contrast Mi’kmaw and European views of the land at the time of first contact and analyse hoe these views impacted on political decision making.

ü      Identify and map the various Mi’kmaq Reserves throughout Nova Scotia, determine the total land area occupied by Reserve Lands, and compare this area to the total land area of the Maritimes.

ü      Identify the current services provided by local Band governments in MI’kmaq communities in Nova Scotia.

 

 

 

Projected timeline for preparation and for carrying out activities

 

Political Power point session and Introduction to the assignment~60minutes

 Google Map Introduction          ~25 minutes

Working on Assignments. Students will require approximately 3 computer classes and  (If you are getting them to design their maps by hand) More if you are getting them to complete all components electronically.  4-5  80minute classes

 The first lesson will be taught to the whole class.

 

Give students two days working in the computer lab to complete the Google Earth Project. They can then use the information from the maps that they create to complete their Final map project.
