Grade Level

 10

Subject Area

 Science 10 Sustainable Ecosystems

Overview of unit/lessons/activities (assumptions of prior knowledge/learning)

Students independently or with a partner will research a single alien species located in Canada and prepare an informative presentation on their organism.  Students may choose the media for their presentation such as: PowerPoint, Windows Movie maker, Poster, overheads.  This is meant to be a brief presentation that informs other students of the impact this organism is having on the ecosystem.

Prior knowledge for students will be to know how to search the internet.

Correlations to ICT and curriculum outcomes

Curriculum Outcomes

Outcome 331-6:  Analyze the impact of external factors on an ecosystem.

Outcome 318-4:  Explain why the ecosystem may respond differently to short-term stress and long-term change

Outcome 318-6: Explain how biodiversity of an ecosystem contributes to its sustainability

Outcome 213-7: Select and integrate information from various print and electronic sources or from several parts of the same source

ICT Outcomes

CT 12.3 (relates to 9.1) design and create electronic documents to accomplish curricular tasks

RPSD 12.3 (relates to 9.3 – 9.8) evaluate and organize ideas and information from a wide range of media and a variety of sources to meet their curriculum needs efficiently and independently

Projected timeline for preparation and for carrying out activities

Once the project is assigned 7-10 days can be given for preparation.

One class may be given for students to prepare their presentation and/or instruct on searching using the internet (use of Ebsco).

Class time will be needed for the presentation of their projects which should take no more than 5 minutes each and will therefore depend on the number of students in the class.

Equipment Requirements: (computers, software, etc)

LCD projector

Students will need access to computers with presentation software i.e. PowerPoint, Windows Movie maker.

Students will need access to overhead sheets and markers.

Teaching materials provided (Blacklines, worksheets, templates, teacher materials)

Alien Species handout

Resources available for teacher/student use (websites, references, etc)

Hinterland Who's Who

List of invasive plant species to Canada

Detailed instructions for each activity or lesson (teacher notes, activity information, learning strategies, teacher role, student roles)

Handout project ‘Alien Species Project’ to be presented in 7-10 days. Students must have their species approved by the teacher.  To find a suitable organism the following website can be used http://www.cwf-fcf.org/invasive/chooseSC.asp. Students will be expected to have their partner chosen by the next class and two to three possible species selected. Teachers must then select the species for the individual/partner and let them know.

A class can be given for student preparation.  Ideally a computer room would be available for this.  If available within your school library staff, teachers may also want to have a presentation done on Ebsco.

Students present their alien species project and teachers assess them using the rubric they were given on the day the project was assigned.

Student products expected

Students will present their alien species to the class.

Samples (include teacher notes, assessment information, student work if available)

An example of a Alien Species project

Logistics (organization, grouping, management issues, access to technology)

Students will need to have access to computers.  Although this may be assigned to be done independently, the possibility of partners may mean teachers give one class for putting the project together.

Assessment information (e.g., rubrics for products and/or process)

Assessment form is on the Alien Species handout
