Title Hurricanes of the Atlantic
Grade Level 11
Subject Area Oceans
Overview of unit/lessons/activities (assumptions of prior knowledge/learning)

This is a group project 2-3 members per group, that will require each student to research a hurricane of the Atlantic and report the information as a news cast either on  television or radio to present to the class. They will be using various software and technology to produce a report detailing their findings and conclusions, about information before and after the hurricane. The project can be completed within two weeks, 2 - 3 class periods and then at home. The report will be presented to the class and graded on a leveled grading rubric where students are able to pick what level they want their project to be.

Students will have to have prior knowledge of how to capture and edit video or sound tracks, use Word and/or note pad to make a script, format pictures form the internet.

Logistics (organization, grouping, management issues, access to technology) This is a small group assignment by design. Students will be completing the majority, of the work at home. However, there are always  cases where students do not have computers, and will therefore be relying on school computers to compile their data. As noted in the "Detailed Instructions" section, the teacher should make very clear to the students where and when they will have access to technology (computers and cameras).
Assessment information (e.g., rubrics for products and/or process) See leveled grading and criteria on the assignment sheet in teaching materials section.
Possible extensions Students have the choice to challenge themselves at various levels according to the assignment layout.
Adaptations for students requiring additional support If students are having difficulty completing a video or a radio news cast, a PowerPoint can be done with images and information.
