  Course Outline

 

 

In this course you will gain experience with a wide variety of art materials and techniques though an exploration of the elements and principles of design.  The historical and cultural significance of art-making and its evolution to modern art will be an integral part of the assignments and projects completed during the semester.  In addition to specific media techniques, you are expected to develop art vocabulary, observational skills, personal expression and problem solving skills.  You will have plenty of opportunity to explore, experiment and create!

 

The following material, processes, and topics will be the focus of our learning this semester:

 

Drawing : Drawing is an integral component and foundation for most art-making activities.  We will explore different types of drawing techniques including: gesture, contour and tonal studies using a variety of materials such as pencil, colored pencil, chalk, oil pastel, graphite and ink.

 

Painting:  Color theory will be studied using water color, tempera, and acrylic paint.  Subject matter will include landscape, still-life, figurative work and abstract images.

 

Printmaking: Various types of printmaking will be explored as time allows, including: mono printing, collagraph printing, and linoleum or wood-block printing.

 

Mixed Media: Students will experiment with combinations of materials through a number of assignments including collage, montage, resist painting and digital art technologies.

 

Sculpture: Several sculptural processes will be studied and explored including: relief sculpture, additive and reductive techniques using copper, plasticine, wire, clay and plaster.

 

Art History: Art History will be taught within the context of the art-making process. A project about an individual artist or movement in art will be completed as part of the course.

Evaluation

 

Evaluation in the art class is a continuous process meant to inform students and parents about student achievement.  There are various forms of assessment that will be used including: observation, projects, portfolio assessments, tests, reports, self and peer evaluation.

 

70% projects

30% exercises and tests

 

There is a final process exam to be completed during class time worth up to 20% of your final mark for the semester.
