Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcme to another school year! My name is Holly O’Hearn and I am happy to be your child’s teacher. We have had a busy day getting organized are getting to know each other.  I know it won’t be long before it is as if we have never left. I am in my 7th year of teaching grade 6 at Seaside and am looking forward to working with both yourselves and your child this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me via school phone or email at hohearn@staff.ednet.ns.ca.  I have a class website which has all class information.  You can reach it through the Seaside link.  I will have it updated by the end of the week.

Your child will be bringing home a sheet titled One Million Words.  This is an opportunity for you to give me a better understanding of your child.  Please inform me if there is something particular that you would like me to know to get your child off to a great start this year

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Holly O’Hearn

Classroom Expectations

At the beginning of each year we establish a few simple expectations which each student in my class is required to follow.  The expectations are based on respect for self, respect for others and respect for the school environment.

We discussed the classroom rules and expectations.  Our goal is to develop a classroom environment in which everyone is respectful and supportive towards one another.  Students are also expected to put their best effort into all activities and assignments they receive this year.

Homework

I appreciate and understand the importance of family time. With this being said, homework is still considered an important part of a child’s learning. In 6E, students will be expected to complete one math sheet a week which will help to reinforce the current curriculum concepts being taught in class.  This will also keep you aware of what your child is working on in class.  From time to time there will be other assignments that will need to be completed at home. Students are expected to read nightly for at least 20-30 minutes, for this will support reading strategies that are modeled and practiced in class.

While I did not ask for agendas, a communication log has been set up and will be sent home in your child’s Homework duo-tang.  It will list important events and assignments as well serve as  a tool for you to communicate anything to myself and vice versa.  Homework will be sent home on Monday and due Thursdays. Along with homework I am sending home a “Bonus Brief” that is primarily for you to read.  It briefly outlines what we were working on in class the week before so you are up to speed.  Please ask to read this and look for it on Mondays.

Class Website

As noted above, I have a classroom website.  It is linked to Seaside’s website which can be found at the following address: http://seaside.ednet.ns.ca/.

You will soon be able to access your child’s schedule, homework, assignments, projects, newsletters etc. by visiting the classroom web page.

Extra

Students should have a pair of sneakers that are not worn outside.  These indoor sneakers should be kept at school and will be worn in school so that our room and school will stay clean.  Students are also expected to bring a change of clothes for Phys. Ed.

Students may also wish to bring a small water bottle to school, which can be left on their desks and used as needed throughout the day.
