Twelfth Night has 12 main characters, Viola, Sebastian, Captain, Orsino, Olivia, Maria, Sir Toby Belch, Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Malvolio, Feste, Antonio, Fabian plus narrators and extras.
This is how the play goes: Sebastian and Viola start the play out on a ship. But with a tragic turn of events, a thunderstorm wipes the ship out. Then we find Viola and the captain of the ship on a beach where they talk about getting Viola a job. She decides to dress and act as a boy to become a page for Duke Orsino, who rules the Illyria, the place where they landed.
But in Orsino's land he was upset that Olivia did not like him because he is in love with Olivia. Then a servant runs in to Orsino's room and tells him that Olivia is sad because her father and brother died the previous fall. Then Orsino thinks that he can actually have Olivia because he can love her more than her brother and Father.
In the next scene Sir Andrew tells Sir Toby about how he loves Olivia, Sir Toby's niece. Then Sir Toby tells Sir Andrew that if he stayed longer Olivia would love him back.
Later , Orsino tells Cesario (A.K.A. Viola) to tell Olivia his true feelings.
When Viola gets there she gives Olivia a speech written by Orsino. Olivia tells Cesario to leave and tell Orsino that she hates him. Then when Viola leaves, Olivia gives Malvolio (her servant) a ring and tells him to give it to Cesario. Then when Cesario gets the ring he knows that Olivia is in love with her, but she's in love Orsino who really loves Olivia! Oh no!
That night back at Olivia's place Feste, Sir Toby, and Sir Andrew had a party. Maria stomped in during it and told them to stop partying , but surely enough they convinced Maria to join in the festivities. Then Malvolio comes in and shouts at all of the of the party animals to stop because Olivia needs her sleep.
After Malvolio leaves, the whole party plots against him. They decide to write him a love note written in code. It will be "from" Olivia and it will say that she loves Malvolio more each day! What a fib!
The next morning at Orsino's palace, Cesario tells Orsino that Olivia still doesn't love him. Then Orsino tells Cesario to bring a jewel to Olivia.
The same morning Sir Toby and company are writing the note for Malvolio. Then Sir Toby and friends hide to watch the scene unfold in front of them. When Malvolio finds the note he is overjoyed, to say the least! After the fun Sir Toby asks Maria to marry him.
Finally Sebastian comes back (remember him from the boat? He's Viola's twin brother) with a seaman, Antonio. Sebastian tells Antonio to leave, because Sebastian thinks he is unlucky, but Antonio stays anyway. As they got closer to Orsino's palace, Antonio starts fidgeting because people in that town say he committed a crime and Orsino wants to lock him up. Antonio gave Sebastian all his money and said that he didn't need it.
Back at Sir Toby's place, Sir Andrew is very mad at Cesario because he thinks that Olivia loves Cesario more than she loves him, which is true! Sir Andrew is moping around, until Sir Toby proposed a duel between Cesario and Sir Andrew to show Olivia that Sir A. loves her more. Then he rushes off to write down the threat. When he was alone Sir Toby laughs his head off about the duel, because he thinks that it will be very funny between a gentle page and a scared knight!
Then Maria runs into the room in hysterics because Malvolio has fallen for the love letter. Olivia strolls in and right behind her is Malvolio dressed in stylish yellow stockings and marvelous garters of black. ( Ha-Ha). Olivia naturally thought he was insane. After Malvolio leaves, Maria gets Sir Toby and they plot to put him in a prison cell.
Then Sir Andrew comes in with a letter to Cesario about the fight. Sir Toby thinks it wasn't wild enough, so he 'fixed it up', so to speak.
Then he shows Cesario the new and wild challenge that he wrote and Cesario (Viola, just to remind you) is stunned. She is sure she is going to die.
Sir Toby runs and tells Andrew that Cesario was really strong and can't wait to fight. This makes Sir Andrew not want to fight, so Sir Toby pushes him over to Cesario, who is also very scared.
When Antonio comes along, he stops them fighting because he thinks that Cesario is Sebastian. Antonio is captured by guards sent by Orsino because they think that he is a criminal.
Sir Andrew realizes that Cesario isn't tough at all. Then Sebastian walks into sight and Sir Andrew thinks he is Cesario. Sebastian isn't afraid and he starts to fight right away. Sir Toby tries to stop the fight, but Olivia walks in and is angry at Sir Toby for fighting. She tells Sir Toby to leave, along with Sir Andrew.
Olivia thinks that Sebastian is actually Cesario, whom she loves. She invites him into her house. Sebastian follows her, although he had no idea what is going on.
Meanwhile, back at Malvolio's cell, Sir Toby and his friends are taunting him and are telling him he is possessed. Malvolio asks for some paper to write a letter to Olivia, asking her to let him out.
While all this is going on, Olivia and Sebastian are getting married!
Soon, Antonio is led up to Orsino, who remembers him, and is convinced he is guilty of a crime. Antonio tries to tell Orsino that he had helped Cesario, who he mistook for Sebastian. Orsino thinks he is lying, because Cesario has been his page for the last few weeks, so he couldn't have been with Antonio.
Just then, Olivia walks in, telling Cesario how happy she was to be married to him. Orsino gets mad at Cesario for marrying Olivia, because he is the one who loves Olivia. Viola is upset because she was not the one who married Olivia!
Then Sir Toby and Andrew walk in, shouting at Cesario for hurting him. Actually, it was Sebastian who had hurt them, and they only had little scrapes.
Amid all the confusion, Sebastian walks in and tells Olivia he's sorry he hurt Sir Toby and Sir Andrew. Then he saw Cesario and after a while, they realized they were each other's twin!
Orsino thinks that this is great and asks Viola to marry him right away.
Feste then walks in with Malvolio's letter and Olivia sends for Malvolio. When Malvolio finds out about the trick, he is steaming mad and leaves in a huff.
Now, everything in this confusing tale is sorted out, and everyone is happy, except for Malvolio. But then again, he never was very happy anyway!
