Improvised Playlet (Putting Down the Dog) - This is an in-class group assignment (groups of 3 or 4) assigned on September 22. Click here to view the evaluation rubric.
Marvelous Monologue #1 - Performances begin on Tuesday, September 26, 2006. The Character Work Sheet and a copy of your script is to be handed in on the day you perform your monologue.
Choral Voice Poetry Assignment - This is an in-class group activity assigned on October 12, 2006. Click to view the poems used: poem 1; poem 2; poem 3.
Decontextualized Dialogues - This is an in-class group exercise assigned on October 13, 2006. Students were to create a scene lasting at least 2 minutes using one of the dialogues on the page. The context of the scene (environment and character relationship) were to be clearly established in the scene without adding any extra dialogue.
Creating Context Assignment - This is an in-class partner activity assigned on October 17, and presented on October 18, 2006. Click here to view the evaluation rubric
Ten-Minute Play Script - NEW DUE DATE - Tuesday, November 7, 2006 by 4:00 pm. This assignment follows the same format as the Eastern Front Theatre Ten-Minute Play Contest. Students are encouraged to develop their plays in accordance with these rules for later submission to the Eastern Front contest in the spring of 2007.
For students who are looking for a really useful guide for the playwriting process, check out The Young Playwrights Page. This site contains step-by-step suggestions for creating a quality piece for the stage.
For students who are looking for scriptwriting templates to use in MS Word, the BBC has a series of Script Smart templates in their Writersroom. The UK edition of Script Smart Gold has a macro for a STAGE script layout that allows you to create a style similar to Eastern Front Theatre's Format #1. The US edition has a macro that creates a style similar to Format #2. They might take a bit of getting used to, but they seem to work well.

Marvelous Monologue #2 - Performances take place on Thursday, December 14, 2006.
The Character Work Sheet and a copy of your script (with extensive blocking notes - check out the handout on "Stage Basics" for a refresher of some theatre language) is to be handed in on the day you perform your monologue. The work sheet and script will count as part of your journal mark (Journal #12).
