The Five Elements

These five elements, woven through the Beginning, Middle & End of a story, make up the Basic Scene Structure:

1.    Environment (Setting)

Create a logical environment / setting for the scene.

2.    Relationship (Character)

Create characters and establish their relationship to each other.

3.    Conflict (problem/obstacle/goal)

Create a conflict or series of conflicts for the characters to deal with.

4.    Stakes (motivation)

Raise the stakes at least once during the scene. Create ways of making the scene matter by providing motivation for the characters and reasons for the audience to want to watch the scene.

5.    Resolution

End the story by finding a suitable resolution to the conflicts you have created.
