Although you are in the Options and Opportunities program, the English 10 program that you will follow will have the same outcomes and expectations of any other English 10 program.
Assessment & Evaluation:
A student’s final mark= 70% Course Work + 30% Exam
Please note that all work will be marked in relation to the provincial English Language Arts Outcomes.
Tools for assessment for learning will include, but may not be limited to:
o Writing assignments
o Written responses to questions
o Oral responses
o Journal responses
Tentative breakdown for Evaluation of learning
ü Reading and Viewing 40 %
ü Speaking and Listening 15 %
ü Writing and Representing 45 %
Evaluation:
Each and every item I assign the students will be tied directly to the outcomes. Students will receive a mark out of four on each of these. Some assignments will be marked on one outcome; some will have multiple outcomes attached to them. For a complete list of the outcomes for English ten, click here.
Scores will be presented in relation to the GCOs. (General curriculum outcomes…These are the “big things” the kids should know how to do by the end of grade 10) Each one of these GCOs is broken down into smaller SCOs. ( Specific curriculum outcomes…These are the little pieces that come together to form the bigger GCOs.) Students score on a certain task will be marked out of 4 as to their level of competency on an SCO, and these will be added up and entered as score under a GCO in Power School.
For example: A student completes a writing assignment that asks them to:
a) examine different aspects of language that contribute to meaning
b) recognize how certain ways of writing are used (figurative language etc)
c) show how certain writing coveys a position or opinion
Each part of this assignment would be marked out of 4,depending upon the student's mastery of each specific piece. A mark out of 12 would be entered under GCO # 7 in Powerschool.
Course Materials: Students are expected to come to each class prepared. This includes bringing binder, a scribbler or notebook, a package of post-it notes, paper and pens as well as any texts assigned at that particular time in the course.
Late assignments
Please note: Students will meet with the teacher prior to beginning any project and will be supported throughout the entire process. They will be given a rubric when they begin their assignments which will detail exactly what is expected of them and when it is due. Students who are not able to meet a deadline are required by policy to request an extension. This request must be submitted in writing and will include the name of the student, the name of the assignment, the reason it is not being submitted and the date it will be handed in. If this deadline is given, it must be met or students will have missed the opportunity to demonstrate the outcome.
Please remember that you are O2. Next semester you may be going out on work placements that require you to miss time and to make up your school work. Here is where you prove that you can do that.
