Term One and Two Independent Novel Study

You are to select a novel that has been made into a movie and read it. Part of the project will be due term one and the rest will be completed during term two. Please read the project details and specifics below carefully.

You will read a book that has been made into a movie, complete a ¼ point assignment, watch the movie, write a comparison/contrast review, and present your observations to the class.

1. Select a book (minimum 200 pages) that has been made into a movie. Please note – you are NOT to choose a movie (or video game!) that has been made into a book.

2. Each person in the class is to have a different book. Once you have decided on a book you must sign up on the list in the classroom.

3. Hand in to me by October 2nd, on loose leaf or typed using complete sentences, (1) your name, (2) the title of the book you have chosen (3) author (4) number of pages (5) name of movie and year released (6) if you’ve already seen the movie (7) The reason(s) why you chose your selection.

4. You will complete a ¼ point assignment, presentation and comparison/contrast essay on your novel.

The ¼ point assignment: Write a 200-250 word report explaining (a) what page you have read to at this point (b) who the main character is and what you think of them so far being sure to explain yourself (c) what the main conflict or problem the character is facing at this point (d) what you think of the writer’s writing style – do you like how they are telling the story? Why or why not? (e) What challenges, if any, you are facing in reading your book.

The Presentation: You will be sharing with the class your observations about the book and the movie. How similar or different were they? Were the differences good or bad? Explain. Which did you prefer, the book or the movie? Why? You will be able to take your ideas from your comparison/contrast essay.

Comparison/Contrast Essay: You will write an essay comparing and contrasting the book to the movie. This will be taught in class.

You may complete a power point presentation to go along with your presentation, bring in a cued video clip to share your favourite part or explain a difference, or anything you can think of to make your presentation more interesting. The specifics for the evaluation will be explained prior to presentations. (please note – online video files or clips don’t tend to work very well, if at all.)
