Short Story Assignment: Digital Stories
Project description:
You will be working in your on-line magazine groups to create a digital story
that will be included in your on-line magazine. The comic strip will consist of 10 digital photos
illustrating a story and text to accompany each photo.
The project
consists of 5 parts, each with its own due date.
Develop an
idea for a story and include:
1)
Details on the setting of the story;
the story must be set in SHS or within the perimeter of the building.
2)
Details on the characters. You
need to reflect on who is in your group and consider them as possible
characters. That does not mean your
story is to revolve around students; they can become mothers, fathers, teachers,
etc. Your story should have 3 – 4
characters. You may also call on
students you know who have free periods that may want to participate.
3)
What is going to be the central conflict of your story?
Is the conflict resolved? If
so how? If not, why not?
4)
What is the lot of your story? You
need to consider the main parts such as rising actions, climax, and falling
action.
5)
What is the message or theme you’d like to communicate with your story?
PART TWO – Due at The End of
Class ______________________.
You will
have the class time during __________and ____________to decide as a group:
a)
What your group’s story idea will be.
Remember, you can select from one of the ideas brought to the group, or
create a new possibility by combining several ideas from the group.
b)
Which members will fulfill the following roles within the assignment:
photographer, director, writer, web designer, characters. (note: some of the
roles should be combined to equalize the work effort of the assignment).
Once roles are assigned, students are to realize that role assignment is
only to help with the organization of the project and they are not limited to
that area. Each member is expected
to participate in all other aspects of the assignment, regardless of their
assigned role, by offering suggestions and feedback throughout.
c)
By the end of class on __________, Each group will submit a plan of how
they will organize their story on a sheet I will give you. You may use only 10
photos so you will have to think critically about what images to create and the
text that will be included.
PART THREE
–Taking photos and building the web page.
Possibly
beginning __________ (if your group is ready) and finishing by the end of class
on ____________ your group will begin arranging and taking photos and putting
everything together on a web page. There
are only three digital cameras so they will be allocated on a first come first
serve basis. Once a group has a
camera they have 40 minutes to use it. If
they exceed that time, points will be deducted from their final group mark.
Since there is a limited time, your planning on the ___ and ___ is
crucial!
The Web Page
- The page should include the following:
a)
A title for your story (check out www.flamingtext.com for fun with the
title graphic).
b) The names
of all group participants (under the title).
c)
A background, various fonts, font colours, and sound effects if it suits
you!
d)
You will arrange the photos and text by using the tables option in
FrontPage or Netscape Composer. Select
the table option from the toolbar
and
insert 1 row with 2 columns and select ‘center’. Once you select ok, 2
rectangles will appear on your page.
These first
2 rectangles will be where you will insert the first 2 pictures of your story
(be sure to center your pictures). If
you press the ‘tab’ key, another now of boxes will be added and you can add
your text there. Each time you press the tab key, 2 new boxes will appear
underneath the previous row.
PART FOUR
– Due ____________.
The final
project must be completed by ___________. You
will hand in on a piece of paper the names of each group member and the location
of the final product. I.e. whose
home directory the project is saved on. You will also submit your evaluation
forms (see part 5) on line by ___________.
PART FIVE
– Due _____________ with the comic strip.
This is
where each group member has their say on their own participation in the project,
and the participation of others. Throughout
the course of the assignment each of you will be evaluating the other, and
yourselves, using the following criteria. It
is worth 50% of your grade on this assignment, so read it over carefully and
