Activity 1: Identifying comma splices

From reading Exercise 10, you should know that a comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined together with a comma.  You should also know the three simple ways to correct comma splices:
1)  Replace the coma with a period.
2)  Replace the comma with a semi colon.
3)  Add a coordinating conjunction after the comma (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so - fanboys).

Examine the following sentences.  In those sentences which contain comma splices, circle the misused comma.  In your notes rewrite the incorrect sentences correctly.

1. The man drove a red mercedies, he didn't stop when he hit the pedestrian.
2.  I love chocolate ice cream, she likes vanilla.
3.  When he woke up, his alarm had been going off for an hour.
