Twelfth Night Reflection Questions

Over the course of our reading the play, you will be able to answer the following questions. Refer to these questions regularly to see if you have read the part of the play that will help you answer them. Keep the questions and your answers organized as they will be due when we finish the play. They are to be kept with the scene questions in a duo tang or scribbler.

 

1a.Why do you think Olivia so quickly gets interested in “Cesario”, especially when she has been refusing the attention of the Duke?

b.  How does this reflect on her supposed mourning?

c.  What is your impression of Olivia?

 

2.  Which one of the characters are you most like?  Do you like to party like Sir Toby or are you a schemer like Maria?  Consider the following characters and in a paragraph of 30-50 words explain who you are most like and why.  Choose from: Sir Andrew, Sir Toby, Maria, Olivia, Orsino, Viola, Malvolio, Sebastian, Antonio, or Feste.

 

3a. Do you think there’s a difference in the way men love and the way women love?  Explain. 

b.  Between Orsino and Viola’s views on gender and love (in Act 2), whose views are most similar to your own?  Explain your answer.

 

4.  Think of a movie or t.v. show that has similar story line as Twelfth Night with its disguise and mistaken identity. 

a.  How is that story similar to Twelfth Night?

b. How is it different?

c.  What, in your opinion, creates the most humour in these stories of disguise and mistaken identity?

 

5. T.V shows like Drew Carey and The Simpson’s make us laugh by making fun of the main characters. 

a.  When is it OK to make fun of someone – or is it ever?  Explain.

b.  How is it that shows like this make us laugh, instead of feeling truly sorry for the  person? 

c.  What are some of the character traits that these characters have? 

d. Are there any characters like this in Twelfth Night?  If so, who?

 

6.  Consider the different relationships between characters in the play.  Which characters do you feel share the following types of relationships? Explain your reasoning for each of your answers.

     a. A real love relationship

b. A real friendship

c. An infatuation.
