Interpretation of James Blunt: "Goodbye My Lover"
James Blunts lyrical poem “Goodbye my lover” is what I think is James reflecting on loosing the love of his life. Goodbye my lover gives you a sense of his strong emotion, his passion, his pain & his confusion about the failed relationship. The tone set is sad & depressive, the music selection to the lyrical poem does not enhance it at all – it is a simple piano melody softly played in the background.
Referring
to Lines 7-8 "It may be over but it won't stop
there, I am here for you if you'd only care."
makes me believe that the girlfriend has moved on & has no intention of
letting the boyfriend back in her life emotionally, where as the boyfriend wants
to be apart of her life & care. What also indicates that the boyfriend is
still committed to her & wants a future with her is Lines 27-28 "I'd
be the father of your child. I'd spend a lifetime with you." I
also believe that the boyfriend has optimistic feelings about rekindling the
relationship "And
I will bear my soul in time, when I'm kneeling at your feet."
(Lines 39-40) By
that I think it means he will bear his soul when he is proposing?
In
Goodbye My Lover he is not just saying goodbye to his lover, but also his
friend. Unfortunately in some relationships once it ends often the friendship
ends too. I think for this couple they could not be friends because the
boyfriend could not let go of the past - if he could not have her as a lover -
he could not have her as a friend as well.
My ipod would
tell you that Goodbye my lover is my favorite song, being
overplayed 300+ times. What connects me to this song is my own personal loss,
for me it wasn't a psychical loss but an emotional loss. A loss to a person that
at one time in my life I let extremely close. A person who I have an undying
& unconditional love for. But undying & unconditional love aside we
might not have sang our goodbyes but we are certainly dancing around them. We
are lost in distance - we are lost in our past, we are now complete strangers.
In Goodbye my lover I find myself in relations to the writer, being the one that
has not moved on completely – still confused about the loss, being the one
that is left caring, having my goals &life change because of this one person
and then having the relationship give out – but not seeing the warnings
because “love is blind.”
