October 1, 2010 Seaside Elementary
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are now through the first month of school and we have all been hard at work! The purpose of this newsletter is to inform you of some of the outcomes we have been working on and those that we will be working on soon. I hope that you will find this beneficial as we continue to work together to support your child in the education process.
Thanks to all of those who were able to attend curriculum night. It was a pleasure meeting all of you. If you were unable to attend I sent a brochure home with your child, which provides an overview of the curriculum covered in grade five.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Pardy

We have had a wonderful time reading and writing the past month. Students have been working on word study and Reader’s Workshop. Students are involved in mini lessons, response writing, and independent reading during this time. We have also been focusing on the writing process, through the use of our Writer’s Notebooks and have been doing activities that relate to other subject areas. Students have also been involved in a read aloud entitled The 39 Clues by Rick Riordan.
Some of the Nova Scotia curriculum outcomes covered are: 1. Select, independently, texts appropriate to their interests and learning needs 2. Describe feelings, reactions, values, and attitudes in their writing 3. Describe and discuss their own process and strategies in reading and viewing

Science
We began the year off with a look at Properties and Changes in Matter. This will continue into October. Students are expected to know how to classify solids, liquids, and gases and explain the characteristics of each. The students will be participating in an experiment called Ooblik in which they examine these properties. We will also be looking at the properties that distinguish different solids and liquids from one another.
Some of the Nova Scotia curriculum outcomes we will cover are: 1. Describe situations demonstrating that air takes up space, has mass, and expands when heated. 2. Classify materials as solids, liquids, or gases, and illustrate this classification in a chart that shows their properties. 3. Work with team members to develop and carry out a plan to systematically distinguish a material based on its chemical properties and display the results of the data.
