Pioneer Resource Research Activity

Objective:

To give students an opportunity to research about pioneers and weed out books based on specific information given. This will also give them more experience in using the school’s library services.

Length of Lesson: 1 Hour

GCO:

            Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the past and         how it affects the present and the future.

SCOs:

            Identify, evaluate and use appropriate primary and secondary sources to            learn and communicate about the past

            Apply historical methodology to interpret and understand time, continuity           and change at an age appropriate level

Materials:

• Pioneer Book Search Handout
• Pencil

Procedure:

• The teacher will take the students to the school library as a class and have them do some research on Pioneers. See Pioneer Book Search Handout.
• Within the headings on the handout students are to choose one book to do a book talk on and present to their group.
• Groups will be chosen by the teacher
• The teacher should take notice of who is doing which books so that there are not repetitive book talks due to limited resources.
• Students will be divided into conference groups and give book talks to the other members of the group and the teacher (a conferencing opportunity)
• The students should read their favourite passage from the book, explain why they chose it and what the book was about
• While the conferencing is taking place the rest of the class is given time to work on their projects

Evaluation:

The teacher will evaluate students by keeping a record of their choice of book and measuring the level of effort put into the book talk and keep a running record of their progress for reading recovery.
