Pioneer Life: Clothing, Food and Children

Objective:

To measure reading comprehension and gain experience making comparisons and grouping.

Length of Lesson: 1 Hour

GCO: 

      Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the past and how it affects the present and the future.

SCOs:

            Identify, evaluate and use appropriate primary and secondary sources to learn and communicate about the past

            Identify and compare events of the past to the present in order to make informed, creative decisions about issues

            Describe examples of cause and effect and change over time

            Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and vocabulary associated          with time, continuity and change

Cross Curricular Links: Language Arts

Materials:

• Large chart paper for Venn Diagrams
• Markers
• Paper
• Pencil
• Articles on Food, Clothing and Pioneer Children
• Worksheets

Procedure:

• The teacher will have the students read that handouts on pioneer food, clothing and pioneer children individually and then come together as a group.
• Students should go through the article as a group and find and record the answers. See worksheet.
• Students will do the worksheet as a group and then share their answers with the class.
• Have students compare in a reflection how things are different today in comparison.
• Students will make Venn diagrams for each topic as a class. The diagrams will be done on the board and students will be asked to copy them down into their social studies scribblers.

Evaluation:

The teacher will be able to assess student progress by correcting the worksheets and walking around the class as the students are working and taking notice of their progress and participation in the activity. The reflections will be read by the teacher and responded to by the teacher. The teacher will be bale to assess student learning by examining the relevance of the comparisons made between the two time periods. The teacher should also take notice of the participation levels in making the Venn diagrams and make a mental note of the thoughtful and intelligent answers and questions raised by students. The teacher can then record this as a form of a running record.
