Life in Early Canada

Objective: The objective of this lesson is to provide students with a glimpse into certain aspects of pioneer life by means of a series of short video clips.

Length of Lesson: 1 Hour

GCO: Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the past and how it affects the present and the future.

SCOs: Identify, evaluate and use appropriate primary and secondary sources to learn and communicate about the past

Materials:

• National Film Board video Life in Early Canada (compilation of seven animated stories)

Procedure:

• The teacher will show 4 of the seven animated stories including:

      The New School Teacher (9 minutes)

      The New School House (9 minutes)

      Woolly’s Gift (6 minutes)

      Jamie Really Liked to Eat (5 minutes)

• The videos introduce a new pioneer school house and a teacher in a one room school, the art of dressmaking in pioneer times and the different chores that pioneer children had to do.
• Students will discuss the films as a class after each clip is shown.
• There will be a chance at the end for additional comments and questions.

Evaluation:

The teacher will keep a record of things brought up in the discussion and measure student participation.
