Early
Settler Project
Choose one of the
following projects to complete at home. Families
may help support your project, but not do it for you.
It is important that you learn new skills and information while working
on the project. Return the project
to school by ___________________. Include
a piece of writing explaining what you discovered or learned about the project
you chose.
1.
Design a quilt square using geometric shapes.
Cut the design out of fabric and make a pot holder, hot mat or wall
hanging for your family.
2.
Construct a model of log house using natural materials.
Newspaper can be rolled tightly and secured to represent logs, or small
tree branches can be cut to size and used in the construction.
3. Learn
to knit and make an item which would be useful to the early settlers.
4. Make
a cross-stitch sampler (alphabet) picture and frame it.
5. Weave
an item which cold be used in the early settler home. This can be made from a weaving kit or cardboard hand-made
loom using yarn.
6. Learn
how to braid strips of fabric and make a small hot mat for your family.
Fabric can be cut 6 cm wide for the strips.
7. Carve
or make a tool from wood which would be useful to an early setter.
8. Make
a rag doll using cotton or wool fabric, a tin can doll, or a corn husk doll
using raffia.
9. Make
a picture using old buttons and frame it.
10.
Other – If you have another idea you would like to try, write it down and give
it to your teacher at least 2 weeks before the project is due.
