Introduction to Maps. |
| Lesson 1 -What is a map? |
| Materials: a variety of maps, globes and atlases |
| 1. Present the
students with a variety of maps, including globes and atlases. Give
the students time to study these maps and make observations about the kind
of information found on a map.
2. As a group make a list of the types of information that was found. Students must be prepared to explain how the information was represented, for example a product map will use different symbols than an elevation map. List they types of maps and the various information found on each one. Be sure students understand the relationship between a map of the world and a globe. 3. Have groups make a charts of the symbols found on different maps and present their findings to the class. 4. ASSIGNMENT as a mini project, have each student draw a map of an imaginary place. Emphasize the correct use of symbols. |
