Time
Lines
KSO – Students will be able to read and construct timelines and
sequence series of events.
Materials: one or more
samples of a timeline; My Life timeline worksheet; pencil; a strip on which to
draw personal time line; crayons or coloured pencils.
Time frame: This lesson
will take several Social Studies periods and require information gathering for
homework.
Activities: Lesson 1
1.
Post the prepared timeline(s) where they are easily seen by the
class. Have class members report
about what they observe on the timeline(s).
Draw some conclusions about what a time line is and what it represents.
2.
Have students create a brainstorm list in their scribblers that has
important events from their lives. They
should record their age at the time of the event.
3.
They each will put their brainstormed list in order according to
they age at the time of each event.
4.
Give students the prepared worksheet: My Life Timeline Worksheet and have them fill in the form
using events from their own brainstorm.
5.
Students will then take the worksheet home to get help from parents
in adding to the list (especially the early years) and checking that the ages
listed are correct.
Lesson 2, 3 or more.
1.
Each student will be given a strip of paper an appropriate size for
making a timeline. Have them draw a
line and divide it into the correct number of sections so each one represents
one year of their life. Label the
ages. Using the worksheet add the important events to the timeline putting each
event in chronological order.
2.
Draw pictures to go with the events.
3.
When satisfied with the layout and neatness, colour the pictures.
