Learning About the Past
Introduction: What
is the Past?
KSO - By the end of Grade 6 students will be expected to identify
and correctly use vocabulary associated with time.
Materials: paper and
pencil; books or short articles about, or set in, the past; chart paper;
sentence strips.
Activities: 1.
Assign students to small cooperative groups and assign each group a
reading assignment from one of the books or articles about the past.
2. Ask each group to
record the key points in the reading that gave them clues as to the time in
which the reading was set.
3. As a class create
a web to record all of the key points from the readings.
4. Have groups get
together again to write a definition of “The Past”. Share the definitions with the class by recording them on
sentence strips and posting them with the brainstorm web.
5. Conclude the lesson by having students illustrate a title page for the unit and illustrate it with as many sources of information about the past as they can think of.
