Subject: Problem of the Day Comparing Fractions |
|
|
Background: Students need experience with naming fractions before attempting this lesson. Outcomes: Students will be able to compare and order fractions. Materials: Overhead Projector, pattern blocks or fraction circles. Activities: Place overhead fraction circles, or fractions made using the overhead pattern block hexagon on toe overhead projector. Ask the students to write the fractional notation in their scribbler. Next ask the students to put these fractions in order from largest to smallest. Have them write a few sentences to explain why they chose the order they did. Discuss the answers and explanations. Assessment: Assessment is informal. Watch as the students are working and note if what they are thinking is reasonable. Reference: MathLand Journeys Through Mathematics Daily Tune-Ups, Charles et al, Creative Publications. |
